Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) is a form of rehabilitation that makes use of activities that have a goal and are meaningful in order to restore or improve a person’s functional performance and increase their ability to perform daily life activities. Occupational therapy addresses multiple components of performing tasks (for example, physical, cognitive, psychosocial, sensory, etc.) in a variety of environments to support a person’s engagement in everyday activities that affect health, well-being and quality of life.

The academic discipline behind occupational therapy, Occupational Science, studies the interactive relationship of activities and health; for example, how taking part in ordinary activities can either impair or improve health. Occupational Science also studies the effect that illness, injury, emotions and cultural influences have on a person’s ability to participate in activities that are important to them. Occupational scientists are qualified in a broad range of medical and psychological conditions and issues, often specializing in multiple areas of expertise.
